Northern VT to Quebec City (VT-USA, QC-Canada)

Newport to Old Québec: Ride the Northern Route

Overview

Enjoy this epic tour through the heart of Quebec. This route (mostly) follows along Route Verte 1. The Route Verte (Green Route) is a network of routes that combine bike paths, multi-use trails, quiet roads, bike lanes and some shared roads in Quebec, Canada. The trail network inaugurated on August 10, 2007, and spans over 3000 miles.  If you are an explorer, totally use this route as a starting point to explore more of what Quebec has to offer.

This particular route can be broken down into 3 rough sections:

  • Newport, VT to Ayer's Cliff - (Newport bikepath + Sent Nature Tomifobia) ~15 miles
  • Ayer's Cliff to North Hatley ~12 miles - This is the only section which is predominantly on shared roads. Please take care in this section!
  • North Hatley to Quebec City (Rte Vert 1) ~150 miles (With some minor breaks in the trail in Sherbrooke)

Difficulty Explained:

This is labeled as moderate due to the distance and certain sections with shared roads.  Overall the route is mostly flat but there are some notable climbs.  Also, while the route is not totally remote, there are sections with limited lodging so some pre-planning is critical.

Alternate to Full Trail:

If you don't want to deal with complicated logistics of getting to Newport, VT, you can always start the route in Sherbrooke, QC which has a direct Bus connection with Quebec City.  This would shrink the route by about 30 miles.
