Loop around Nova Scotia

Lighthouses, Lobster Boats, and Atlantic Coast Miles

Overview

This is a perfect route if you’re looking to experience Maritime culture, serene nature, and beautifully maintained rail trails all in one trip. It’s especially well-suited for:

  • Riders new to bike touring who want a low-stress introduction
  • Bikepackers looking for a mostly car-free experience
  • Cyclists who value scenery and immersion over speed
  • Anyone wanting a multi-day adventure (5–10 days) in a completely new landscape

With its combination of accessible terrain and frequent small towns, it strikes a great balance between adventure and comfort.

Route History

A large majority of this route links together several rail trails and cycling paths that span across Nova Scotia, creating a surprisingly continuous off-road journey.

The route loosely parallels the famous Lighthouse Route, a ~585 km coastal corridor between Halifax and Yarmouth. While much of your ride stays off-road, there are opportunities to dip into classic coastal scenery—rugged Atlantic shoreline, fishing villages, and historic harbors.

Along the way, you’ll pass near places like Lunenburg, where 18th–19th century shipbuilding history is still visible in its preserved architecture. This region has deep roots in fishing and maritime trade, and further along the route you’ll encounter Acadian communities near Pubnico, one of the oldest Acadian regions in North America.

What makes this route special is the contrast: quiet inland rail trails through forests and farmland, paired with optional detours to vibrant coastal culture. It’s not a polished, fully paved touring route—but that’s part of the appeal. It feels authentic, grounded, and deeply connected to the landscape.

Difficulty Explained

Moderate (Endurance-Based, Technically Easy)

This is a very doable route for riders of all levels, especially those comfortable with longer distances.

  • The terrain is relatively flat, thanks to the rail-trail design
  • Most of the route is separated from vehicle traffic, reducing stress significantly
  • The primary surface is crushed gravel, which slows pace but is not technical

The “moderate” rating comes from:

  • The overall distance (600+ km)
  • Long daily riding distances
  • Slightly increased effort required on gravel vs pavement
